John specialises in corporate law and has a broad corporate and commercial practice including advising upon domestic and cross-border mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, venture capital and private equity transactions, corporate reorganisations and migrations, loan portfolio acquisitions and sales, fundraisings, corporate governance and commercial advisory work and commercial contracts, both for Irish and particularly for international clients. He also deals extensively with overseas clients and counsel on the establishment of business operations in Ireland both by acquisition and initial establishment. He has particular experience and expertise in transactions and advisory work in the technology, energy and insurance and financial services sectors.

John has headed up both our London and New York offices and heads up one of the firm’s M&A groups and has served on the firm’s Management Committee. John previously practised with an international law firm in London.  John has served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Lex Mundi, the world’s leading network of independent law firms.

  • Acting for Centrica Plc on the acquisition of Bord Gáis Energy
  • Acting for Bain Capital on the acquisition of certain loan portfolio assets
  • Acting for Blackstone on the acquisition of certain loan portfolio assets
  • Acting for a number of other leading US private equity houses with respect to the acquisition of certain Irish loan portfolio and other assets
  • Acting for KBC Bank on the sale of its Irish asset management business to Kleinwort Benson and other corporate and loan portfolio transactions
  • Acting for a number of other Irish and international financial institutions with respect to the disposal and acquisition of loan portfolio assets
  • Acting for Aviva Europe on a complex pan-European shared services arrangement involving the establishment of a European Economic Interest Grouping in Ireland
  • Lead partner for Wells Fargo Bank on the establishment of its Irish operations and ongoing corporate governance and corporate transactional advice
  • Acting for Life Technologies Inc on the acquisition of Stokes Bio Limited
  • Acted as Irish counsel to Thoma Bravo, LLC in relation to its acquisition of LANDesk Software, Inc and in relation to a number of reorganisations with respect to Landesk Software
  • Advising Montreux Equity Partners on an investment and joint venture in relation to Global Consolidated Aesthetics Limited
  • Acting for Regeneron Pharmaceuticals with respect to establishing manufacturing facilities and corporate offices in Ireland and related transactions
  • Acting for a number of European conglomerates with respect to Court-sanctioned cross-border mergers and portfolio transfers into and out of Ireland
  • Lead corporate partner acting for the Willis Group with respect to its corporate migration from Bermuda to Ireland
  • Acting for Qualcomm Inc. on the acquisition of Xiam Technologies Limited and related transactions
  • Acting for Mastercard on the acquisition of Orbiscom Limited
  • Acting for Wolters Kluwer on the acquisition of Ci-3 Consultancy Limited
  • Acting for the Irish Department of Finance with respect to due diligence on specific Irish financial institutions
  • Acting for Paladin Labs with respect to its merger with Endo Pharma
  • Advising a number of international insurance companies with respect to various corporate transactions, including material acquisitions, disposals, portfolio transfers and reorganisations
  • Acting for the shareholders of mTLD Top Level Domain Limited (Vodafone, Microsoft, Nokia, Google, Visa, Ericsson, Samsung, Deutsche Telekom, Telecom Italia and others) with respect to its sale to Afilias Limited
