To the relief of many stakeholders, the Minister for Health has reversed the initial instruction to destroy Ireland’s Guthrie card database. In this article first published in Data Protection Ireland, Rob Corbet sets out the background to the proposed destruction of the database and the data protection issues surrounding same. He also sets out an alternative course which might be considered by the expert group recently tasked by the Minister for Health to consider the issue.
