Alastair heads Arthur Cox’s Real Estate Group in Belfast, Northern Ireland.  He has significant experience across the full spectrum of real estate matters. He advises numerous clients who hold extensive and diverse property interests in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain. Alastair’s practice encompasses: acquisition and disposal of all aspects of commercial real estate (including brown field sites); commercial leasing (for both landlord and tenant); advising on contentious property matters; and negotiating warranties and indemnities in connection with the acquisition and disposal of industrial going concerns. Such practice also encompasses responsibility for the Environment and Planning Group in Belfast.

Alastair has strong experience of energy-sector transactions in Northern Ireland, whether acting for developers, funders or landowners. Additionally, he also has in depth knowledge of the healthcare sector, having acted for the majority of the national and regional nursing/respite home providers. Alastair has acted as a consultant to the Environmental Policy Division of the DoE, where he advised on the drafting of environmental legislation. He is a former Secretary of the Environmental and Planning Law Association for Northern Ireland and member of Northern Irish working group of United Kingdom Environmental Law Association (UKELA). Alastair is an occasional lecturer on the issue of Contaminated Land and sits on the Business Environment Committee of the Institute of Directors, focusing on planning related policy.

  • Advising a consortium of Banks on the NI real estate aspects of Tesco’s £685 million commercial mortgage-backed bond issue
  • Advising AES on the real estate related aspects of the acquisition of Ballylumford Power Station
  • Advising various banks, Receivers and Administrators on portfolios of distressed real estate assets
  • Advising Biffa Waste Services Limited in connection with the real estate related aspects of its Cottonmount Landfill facility. This included Negotiating the lease arrangements for the first land-fill site in Northern Ireland to obtain IPP consent
  • Acting for Four Seasons Healthcare and Southern Cross Healthcare in relation to their Northern Irish properties (including the the £1.2 billion sale of the Four Seasons Healthcare Group of Companies)
  • Acting for Your Energy Limited in relation to the real estate aspects of the development and construction of its Northern Irish wind farm projects
  • Acting for the Quinn Group in relation to real estate aspects of its wind farm interests in Northern Ireland
  • Acting for FSA on real estate and access rights re the bond issue for the acquisition of Phoenix Natural Gas Limited’s transmission assets by NIEH
  • Advising the successful bidder on various issues on the Alpha PPP Project to upgrade Northern Ireland water treatment facilities
  • Advising funders including NordBank on the real estate and access rights issues relating to the funding and development of a number of major wind farm developments in Northern Ireland
  • Acting for the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi in relation to the extension of the financing of RES Group’s portfolio of wind farms in Europe
  • Advising on the acquisition of a number of prominent brownfield development sites
