About the bursary
The bursary of €10,000 is awarded to students pursuing studies related to renewable energy. By investing in emerging talent, the aim of the bursary is to foster the next generation of innovators and leaders driving a sustainable future.
The bursary was established in memory of former Arthur Cox partner and consultant Niamh Burke, who played a significant role in the development of the Irish wind energy sector and advised on many of Ireland’s largest energy, infrastructure, and construction projects.
Who can apply
It provides financial assistance to help cover tuition fees, research costs, and other educational expenses. All relevant disciplines are open for consideration, including economics, engineering, law, planning, policy, science, and others. It is open to students planning to study in these or related fields in Ireland at postgraduate level in 2026. If more than one person is selected, the bursary monies will be split between the successful applicants.
Previous recipients have used the bursary to study at Dublin City University, the Law Society of Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, University College Cork, University College Dublin, and University of Galway.
Last year’s recipient and industry impact
Last year’s recipient, Anna Connors, impressed the judges with her commitment to renewable energy and sustainability through her studies in energy systems engineering. Anna used the bursary to fund a Master’s in Energy Systems Engineering at the University of Galway.
Anna commented on the bursary: “Receiving the Niamh Burke Renewable Energy Bursary was a huge support for my academic journey. The bursary enabled me to pursue my Master’s in Energy Systems Engineering at the University of Galway, deepen my research, and connect with inspiring leaders in the renewable sector. I would encourage anyone passionate about sustainability and innovation to apply.”
Jacinta Conway, Environment and Planning Partner, Arthur Cox LLP said:
“The Niamh Burke Renewable Energy Bursary is more than just financial support, it’s an investment in the creativity, ambition, and vision of students who will shape Ireland’s sustainable future. We look forward to seeing how this year’s applicants will contribute to the ongoing transformation of our energy landscape.”
Noel Cunniffe, CEO of Wind Energy Ireland, also commented:
“With the surge of green jobs now and into the future, we have a skills gap in wind and renewable energy related fields. We need to nurture and promote talent in this area. There is a job for everyone in wind energy and bursaries like this one are vital in supporting people into important green roles. They are the leaders and change makers of the future.”
