Pádraig (52) is a senior Corporate Partner and served as Managing Partner of Arthur Cox for eight years until November 2011. He focusses on strategic corporate, M&A and governance issues.

He has particular expertise in advising on regulated sectors and Irish State-related matters. During his tenure as Managing Partner, Pádraig was named European Managing Partner of the Year and Arthur Cox was recognised as European Law Firm of the Year, Best Managed European Law Firm and Best European Corporate Citizen. He later received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Managing Partners’ Forum. Pádraig was featured as ‘Dealmaker in the Spotlight’ by the American Lawyer for his work for the Irish State on the financial aid programme provided to Ireland by the Troika, EU Commission and ECB during Ireland’s banking crisis.

Relevant Experience

Lead external legal adviser to the Irish Department of Finance and NTMA throughout Ireland’s banking crisis. This work included:

  • the nationalisation and later the liquidation of Anglo Irish Bank
  • the design and establishment of the National Asset Management Agency (NAMA
  • the defence of the Irish State from litigation by a series of affected market participants throughout this period
  • liability management in the Irish banks and the implementation of burden sharing with holders of subordinated debt
  • the recapitalisations and later restructuring of the entire Irish banking sector
  • the financial aid programme for Ireland provided by the IMF, the EU Commission, the ECB and others
  • the preparation of the Covered Institutions (Financial Support) Act 2008, the Anglo Irish Bank Corporation Act 2009, the National Asset Management Agency Act 2009, and the Credit Institutions (Stabilisation) Act 2010
  • Lead adviser to the Irish Stock Exchange on its acquisition by Euronext, due to complete in the first quarter of 2018
  • Advising the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, the Department of Finance, the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform and the National Treasury Management Agency on the State’s support for the bid by the Irish Rugby Football Union to host the Rugby World Cup Tournament 2023
