Cían is a partner in the firm's Employment Law Group. He has over 10 years experience advising clients on all aspects of employment and industrial relations law. His practice includes representing employers in contentious employment and industrial relations disputes before all of the employment law tribunals and the Irish courts.
Cían also advises our clients on all issues that arise out of the employer-employee relationship including individual or collective grievances, trade disputes, relationships with trade unions, employee relations, disciplinary investigations and proceedings, the termination of employment (both disciplinary and redundancies), work force reductions and restructurings, fixed-term and part-time worker legislation and complaints of bullying or harassment. He also assists clients in developing appropriate human resources and industrial relations policies and procedures. Cían's focus is on developing and implementing practical and effective strategies for clients, as it is for the Group as a whole.
Cían’s practice also include advising buyers and sellers on the employment law aspects of all commercial transactions including transfer of undertaking issues that can arise on the sale or purchase of businesses and in outsourcing arrangements.
He also assists clients on Irish immigration law, typically in connection with the international mobility of employees and the transfer of employees to Ireland on a long or short term assignments. This area of his practice includes advising on all aspects of Ireland’s work permit, green card and intra-company transfer schemes. The team has a strong track record of successfully securing appropriate permissions for our clients.
As with the rest of the Employment Law Group, Cían also develops and delivers training to clients. He strongly advocates practical advice and solutions that work for clients.
Experience
Cían has recently been involved in a number of high profile, contentious disputes between clients and trade unions, in which a number of our clients successful obtained High Court injunctions restraining unlawful actions by employees and their trade unions, these included injunctions restraining unlawful secondary picketing and the unlawful occupation of employers’ premises (a “sit in”).
Prior to joining Arthur Cox in 2006, Cían worked as in-house counsel in a large multinational corporation for over 4 years. He was made partner in 2008.
