Ireland has committed itself to substantially exceeding its EU target of 16% for the generation of electricity from renewable sources and the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2020 (referred to as the “20/20/20” targets). The 20/20/20 targets involve an overall EU average of a 20% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, 20% increase in the share of renewables in energy consumption and a 20% improvement in energy efficiency, all by 2020.
The continued development of the Irish onshore wind sector is a key component of Ireland’s strategy to meet its 20/20/20 targets.
