Emissions Trading Scheme (“ETS”) Directive - Aviation Emissions, July 2009

14.08.2009

The European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (“EU ETS”) is a cap-and-trade scheme aimed at reducing carbon emissions from participating industries in the EU. Member State governments cap the amount of emissions from relevant industry sectors and distribute ‘allowances’ representing one tonne of carbon dioxide to operators in those sectors. Each year operators are required to surrender a number of allowances equal to their verified emissions of carbon dioxide for the period. Operators may buy additional or sell surplus allowances under the EU ETS.
