I first became aware of Arthur Cox’s Summer Internship Programme at a careers event and decided to apply. I was unsuccessful in my first attempt, but the following year I applied again and was more fortunate. My only advice to someone preparing for the interviews is, the old cliché, be yourself! It isn’t a trap – no one is expecting you to be able to recite passages of the Companies Act. The first interview is a group discussion, and the second interview is a pleasant conversation about you and your interests.
Once I had started my four weeks at Arthur Cox I quickly realised how committed the whole firm is to the intern programme. People go far beyond simply accommodating you and really enjoy getting to know the new interns. I was even invited to play for the firm’s football team after only a few days in the office! Everyone at the firm is approachable and there are regular intern sessions to help you settle in to your new work environment. The myth that interns just make the tea and coffee is completely inaccurate, you make genuine contributions to real work which clients depend on.
Outside the office, there was a vibrant social scene to be enjoyed. Regular nights out were organised on our behalf and during the month we spent at Arthur Cox we played trampoline-dodgeball, attended comedy shows and escaped the Adventure Rooms.
What is always apparent when working at the firm is the wide variety of people it employs. Arthur Cox clearly values individuality and seeks more than just a one-dimensional type of person. The people on your team come from every corner of Ireland and abroad and many of them originate from non-law backgrounds including my trainee buddy, an English and History graduate!
This internship is truly a great opportunity to see whether commercial law is for you and I would urge anyone with an interest in law to apply!
