Lizzy Beecham, Asset Management and Investment Funds
I studied Law in University College Dublin. It was a great degree and I picked a mixture of subjects including environmental law, media law and International Trade law.
After university I wanted to gain a professional qualification while getting varied legal experience. After studying a “straight” law degree I was keen to gain an understanding of the business environment in Ireland so training in a corporate firm was the ideal. The five rotations structure in Arthur Cox offered more scope to work in a niche practice group in addition to core training in areas like litigation.
To date, I have completed rotations in the Litigation, Insurance, and Energy and Projects practice groups. I currently work in Asset Management and Investment Funds. I really like the fact that I have been given the opportunity to work in a whole range of areas of law before having to decide what area I would most like to qualify into.
Throughout my training, I have learned a lot from working with the different practice groups. Never be intimidated by what you don’t know. If you are willing to follow up your work with logical analysis you can deal with any challenging issue thrown at you (some days will provide multiple!).
The Trainee Development Programme works with your interests and skillset. I have chosen rotations that compliment my interest in financial services, and will use my trainee bursary to complete a course in this field. Flexibility is important- whether it is adjusting to a new seat, a new less-academic style of writing or new types of work.
The most striking feature of the Trainee Development Programme is the helpful, encouraging dynamic within my intake. We share updates, IT tips and frustrated emails when you come to a “dead end” on a client query. It is great to start your career with a really strong network of friends.
