Gavin Mooney, Finance
I completed my B.B.S. (Bachelor of Business Studies) undergraduate degree in Trinity College Dublin before going on to complete a postgraduate diploma in Legal Studies in DIT.
Beginning life as a trainee was an extremely daunting prospect and it was evident from meeting my fellow trainees my first day that everyone felt the same! However, from the moment you begin training the sense of unity and team spirit quickly dispels any nervousness. All the trainees in the intakes ahead are extremely friendly and accommodating providing reassurance, amusing anecdotes and useful tips on what life is like as an Arthur Cox trainee.
For my first rotation, I was placed in the capital markets team of the Finance Department. It was a hugely enjoyable and exciting rotation. It is fascinating to be involved in transactions shaping the financial and legal landscape we live in. It was at times a challenging rotation due to the specialised nature of capital markets law but the sense of team spirit and unity throughout the finance team mean no trainee was ever left feeling out of their depth.
My day to day tasks included reviewing security documents and facility agreements for and on behalf of lenders; researching various areas of capital markets law such as the operation of loan participation notes; drafting of various security documents such as deeds of release, debentures, charges and guarantees; due diligence reports prepared for various financial institutions; and compiling research bibles on key areas of capital markets.
As is evident from the tasks I was involved in, the work was varied, interesting and at times challenging. What strikes me the most about my time as a trainee in Arthur Cox was the focus on teamwork. A trainee who has done a rotation in the area you’re working in will always be willing to offer invaluable advice and insights into a variety of issues such as drafting or research techniques. You also have a team of associates and partners ready to help and share their knowledge.
Trainees are excellent at organising group activities, whether they are social drinks on a Friday or trips away over weekends! Overall, I found life as an Arthur Cox trainee exciting, enjoyable and hugely beneficial to my career as a solicitor.
Having completed the Trainee Development Programme with Arthur Cox, Gavin is now an Associate in our Property Group.
