I began working in Arthur Cox as an intern in the Competition & Regulated Markets group in the summer of 2016. The internship lasted one month and within that time I was introduced to life working in one of Ireland’s largest and most successful law firms.
The experience was truly rewarding; I was placed in a practice group and included as a member of the team from the outset. I was given meaningful work for clients involving pressing deadlines with real-world implications. I was trusted with my own tasks which involved significant responsibilities, including being trusted to represent the firm at different offices and events throughout the city. Those in the firm who I approached with questions were always more than happy to assist.
The opportunities to engage with other teams outside your practice group are particularly rewarding if one has a particular interest in a specific area of law. I expressed that I had an interest in litigation, and so I had the opportunity to go to court with the litigation team.
The internship involved hard work but this was equally-balanced with great social activities. The internship introduced me to life at Arthur Cox in general, and I was invited to firm-wide events which allowed me to get familiar with the friendly and approachable working culture of Arthur Cox. The interns, trainees, associates and partners are treated as equal employees at Arthur Cox: there is no obvious or strict hierarchy in place. You are respected and valued for your work ethic, and made to feel at home. This was encouraged by the opportunities to socialise with your colleagues. Social events were organised weekly that were designed to allow engagement with colleagues on a personal level.
All in all I thoroughly enjoyed my internship with Arthur Cox, and I would recommend the experience to anyone who wishes to kick-start a successful career in corporate and business law.
