- Law and German, University of Dublin, Trinity College (LLB Ling.german)
I chose to study Law and German as the idea of having an international aspect to my law degree and of studying abroad really appealed to me. I spent my Erasmus year in Germany and after finishing college and the FE1s, I had my sights firmly set on travelling again. Arthur Cox provided me with the ideal opportunity to do just that when I was offered an internship working in the legal department of an international pharmaceutical company based in Switzerland.
I was lucky to spend a year living in the beautiful city of Luzern and the internship was a great chance to build up practical legal experience. Working in an in-house environment was very interesting and diverse as our team was responsible for the legal aspects of the company's operations in Europe, Asia and Africa. From a travel perspective, the location was perfect and I managed to fit in plenty of skiing!
Since beginning my traineeship back in Dublin, I have completed a rotation in the Property Department, where I worked various large-scale property transactions. In addition to developing key drafting skills during my time there, I had the opportunity to attend at closing meetings and tender negotiations which was an invaluable experience. As a trainee you are given a good deal of responsibility and autonomy and the work is challenging. At the same time there is a positive learning environment and I have found that the partners and solicitors are more than willing to take the time to explain issues and answer questions.
There is also a great social network in the firm and among the trainees. It is a big advantage being situated right in the city centre in terms of socialising and maintaining a life outside of work.
