- Admitted as a solicitor (Republic of Ireland) 2002
I joined Arthur Cox as a trainee in 1999 on my return from the almost obligatory and very enjoyable post-college travel.
One of my rotations as a trainee was in the litigation department and within a week I was involved in the trial of what turned out to be the longest running competition law case in Irish history - Eircell -v- Meridian. I really enjoyed my time in this department and began work there when I qualified as a solicitor.
The majority of the work I do is in the area of commercial litigation and I find it is very interesting and varied. It includes pre-dispute advisory work, court proceedings and other forms of dispute resolution in areas as diverse as industry regulation, corporate disputes, tribunal investigations and white-collar crime. The range of clients is also very varied and includes private clients, semi-state bodies, domestic and international private and public companies. As I am often involved in large-scale, high profile disputes dealing with complex legal issues, I work closely with leading professionals in various disciplines.
During the process of applying for a trainee position, I got a strong sense that Arthur Cox was a very approachable and personable firm and since I joined I have not been disappointed. Although it is often busy, the atmosphere is informal and open and people are always willing to take the time to share their knowledge and experience. It makes for an effective and enjoyable working environment.
This environment carries through to the social side of things where, along with dedicated trainee events, there are numerous social events throughout the year. There are also several office sports teams where I and other frustrated professional athletes in the office get the opportunity to showcase our not inconsiderable natural talents!
