It may be tough, but there are some things which are almost guaranteed to take an applicant or interview candidate straight out of the process. At a minimum, be sure to:
- Check your application for spelling and grammar;
- Send the correct application to the correct firm;
- Meet the deadline in good time;
- Explain any gaps in your cv;
- Dress well and professionally;
- Be honest;
- Be polite;
- Be totally familiar with your own cv;
- Know what we do;
Once you have done that, then:
- Show Don’t Tell. Avoid cv and interview speak: do not just tell us that you are diligent, ambitious, dedicated; a team player; a leader. Show us who you are in your cv, your answers and in anecdotes;
- Make it easy for us to decide to select you;
- Present yourself as an equal;
- Take a deep breath and take your time;
- Enjoy yourself.
