all work and no play
We firmly believe that life at Arthur Cox should not just be about work. This can be seen in the lively sports, social and cultural scene within the firm. We organise events throughout the year to encourage people to get together. In the recent past, we have organised comedy nights, table quizzes, greyhound racing and the famous summer BBQ!
For trainee solicitors, the firm organises regular nights out and also funds an annual weekend away. Strand Hill, Dunmore East and Killaloe have been recent destinations for the weekend away. Last year, trainees spent the weekend at an adventure centre in Killaloe learning to kayak, climb and absail! Every Friday evening we encourage trainees to meet for after work drinks.
The firm organises a wide range of sporting activities including 5-a side soccer, golf outings and tennis tournaments. The firm also has a trainee tag rugby team and a successful soccer team who recently reached the final of the inter law-firm soccer league. For those who prefer a gentler pace, there's also yoga and we benefit from discounted membership in a number of sports clubs.
Other social initiatives, from walking tours of the Iveagh Gardens to staging plays, have been popular over the years. The Arthur Cox Dramatic Society's most recent production was a well received rendition of Plunder.
The firm also offers lunchtime language classes in French, Spanish and German, which are hugely popular. They cater for all levels from beginner to advanced and are a great way of getting to know people across the firm.
In August 2007, seven Arthur Cox trainees set off for Tanzania and succeeded in conquering (i.e. crawling/scrambling to the top of!) Mt. Kilimanjaro, and in doing so raised almost €12,000 for the Irish Hospice Foundation and the Rose Project - Aids in Africa. The seven adventurers raised money by holding several events whilst down in Blackhall Place on PPCII. The firm also supported their efforts by organising a firm night out and table quiz in Fallon & Byrne Restaurant, and matching the money generously donated by those in attendance.
