I studied law at Aberdeen University, where I graduated with a degree in Scots and Belgian Law, spending a year of my studies at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, Belgium. During that year, I also gained experience working with David Martin, the Vice President of the European Parliament, and Nicholas Forwood Q.C., who later became a judge at the European Court of First Instance.
The following year, I spent four months working for a small corporate law firm in Montreal, Canada. By the time I returned home, I had decided that I wanted to work for a corporate law firm with a strong international practice, so, after graduation, I converted to English law, studying in Nottingham and Oxford. I trained with Linklaters in London and qualified as a tax lawyer in September 2004. I worked for Linklaters for a further two years, advising a wide variety of domestic and multi-national companies on the tax aspects of corporate, structured finance and capital markets transactions.
"I knew that I had joined the right firm. I can honestly say that I am happy that I made the move to Arthur Cox."
David Robertson
In 2006, my wife (who is Irish) and I decided to leave London and relocate to Dublin. Once that decision had been taken, I immediately contacted Arthur Cox. Whilst at Linklaters, I had worked with various members of the Arthur Cox tax department and I had been impressed with their technical strength and commercial awareness. It also helped that a number of my colleagues at Linklaters had already moved to Arthur Cox and the reports were universally positive. In the end, I decided not to interview elsewhere.
Soon after I arrived at Arthur Cox I found myself back in London, but this time to join my new colleagues in accepting an award for Irish Tax Firm of the Year from the International Tax Review. I knew that I had joined the right firm. I can honestly say that I am happy that I made the move to Arthur Cox. The quality of work is exceptional, with each day bringing new and exciting challenges. Colleagues at every level are extremely friendly and supportive and it is this sense of teamwork within the firm that helps us to provide a seamless service to a broad and impressive list of clients.
