Expertise

Deirdre is a partner in the Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group.  She specialises in banking and finance disputes, corporate crime and regulatory disputes and enforcement.  She advises a wide range of domestic and international clients including financial institutions, State and semi-State bodies and agencies, regulators, receivers, utility providers, developers, employers and insurers on contentious matters including major commercial disputes, criminal investigations and prosecutions, regulatory enforcement, injunctions, judicial review and professional negligence actions.

Deirdre is a leading member of the firm’s Corporate Crime and Health and Safety Groups, a committee member of the Health and Safety Lawyers’ Association of Ireland and guest lecturer in UCD.

Deirdre is also an accredited CEDR mediator.

Experience

  • Acted for Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau AG in the defence of criminal proceedings arising from a fatality in the construction of a subsea tunnel.
  • Acted for a financial institution in the defence of a criminal prosecution arising from a third party contractor employee accident.
  • Acted for a State body in the defence of criminal proceedings arising from a fatal accident.
  • Acted in the defence of criminal prosecutions relating to the treatment and shipment of waste for a major multinational pharmaceutical and separately, a semi-State company.
  • Acted for a third-level educational institution in a criminal investigation and enforcement action arising from a fatal accident.
  • Acted for a multinational gas supplier in the defence of a criminal prosecution on indictment arising from a gas leak.
  • Advised numerous regulators on their statutory enforcement and prosecution functions and powers.
  • Acting for clients in the financial services sector on tracker mortgage related issues and related regulatory action.
  • Advising various financial institutions, funds and funders on large scale loan book sales.
  • Acted for a financial institution in securing a judgment of €18 million against a defaulting borrower.
  • Acting for various financial institutions on material disputes arising from consumer loans.
  • Acting for various financial institutions on lay litigant claims and disputes.
  • Acted for the joint receivers of the Glencullen Group in proceedings relating to the enforcement of security over Group assets.
  • Acting in the defence of numerous judicial review challenges to decisions by An Bord Pleanála to grant substitute consent for EIA development, including for quarry operators and wind farm developers.
  • Acting in the defence of injunction proceedings under the Planning and Development Act against a wind farm development in County Cork.
  • Acting in the defence of injunction proceedings seeking the closure of a major business due to nuisance.
