Jimmy Edwards - Law Clerk

I started off in Arthur Cox in 1988. My career path began in the Post Room, when I replied to a newspaper advertisement in 1988. I began by doing deliveries around the city centre by bike, which lasted for about four months, after which time I moved to the Internal post delivery system. I remained in the Post Room for some time and managed it for a number of years. I was very familiar with the daily running of the system. I also learned how important the internal structures of the general office are to ensure that the firm operates successfully.

About six months before the previous Law Clerk was about to retire, the Personnel Officer approached and asked me whether I would like to take over that position. I accepted immediately as I felt that it would be a great opportunity to develop my skills and experience. For the first six months, one day a week, I accompanied the previous Law Clerk as he went to court to get first-hand knowledge of what was involved. For the remainder of the week, I worked in the Post Room as before. This training time increased until I eventually took over the position of Law Clerk completely.

In my job, being in court is the best way to learn. Most days, I tend to be in court from about 10 a.m. onwards, to attend barristers, meet with them and discuss what materials may be required by the judge. In addition, I file documents in the various court offices. Getting to know people is perhaps the most important aspect of this position. It’s vital for me that I have developed a good working relationship with the people I encounter.

Outside of work, I manage the Arthur Cox soccer team, which plays regularly in tournaments in Blackhall Place. It’s a great way to socialise and to get to know new people. While it’ll never match my love of St. Patrick’s Athletic, I wouldn’t miss taking part in the team!
